Do you want to win the prize that Paul talks about?

Daily Devotion January 1, 2011

Do you want to win the prize that Paul talks about?  He didn’t want to fail.  He strained with every inch, every ounce, every nerve, and every part of his body to win the prize.  He had ambition.  But, it was more than just ambition, it was a holy ambition.

He said, “I want that prize and I’m going to have it.  I’m going to be like an athlete who denies his own body worldly pleasures.  I am going to train like an athlete.  I’m going to stay in shape for the Lord Jesus.  I am going to do all that is necessary that I may win.”

Friend, the Bible clearly teaches that we ought to be ambitious, but for the right reason.  And that reason is for Jesus.  May God but for the right reason.  And that reason is for Jesus.  May God deliver us from pint-sized ambitions and small-time aspirations.

” I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. “  Philippians 3:14

Do you depend upon Jesus Christ?

Daily Devotion December 31, 2010

Do you depend upon Jesus Christ?  I mean totally depend upon Him?  Here’s the way you can tell – are you resting in Him today?

You see, when you are totally committed to Jesus Christ, you rest in Him.  You realize that your every need is necessary for Him to supply.

Have you ever looked at a branch?  It has no other source of life that the vine.  If you asked that branch.  “What’s your secret for your healthy leaves and fruit?”  Then he would say, “My secret is that I’m resting in the vine.”

“But, what about your needs?”  You ask.  “I know I have needs but that’s not my responsibility.  My response is to rest in the vine’s ability to provide.  I don’t produce the fruit. I just bear it.”  Are you resting in the Lord today?

“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” John 15:11

In the Gospels, we learn about a man who languished by a pool

Daily Devotion December 30, 2010

In the Gospels, we learn about a man who languished by a pool for 38 years hoping for someone to put him in a pool when the waters stirred so he could be healed (see John 5:1-9).  He had a place in line, but someone always stepped in front of him.  What was Jesus response?  Step out of line take up your bed and walk!

Suppose a man had been standing in line for Super Bowl tickets for 38 years.  His buddy comes up to him and says, “I have two tickets on the 50-yard line.  Come on.”  If he steps out of line, he puts all of his trust into this guy‘s word that he has two tickets on the 50-yard line.

Do you know what a lot of us do?  We want to make a provision for our flesh or we want to keep our spot in line.  Jesus says, “Leave it behind.”

“Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.” John 5:8

I heard about a lady who was looking in her purse for her keys

Daily Devotion December 29, 2010

I heard about a lady who was looking in her purse for her keys.  She looked casually at first, then seriously, then frantically.  Do you know what she discovered?  She was looking in the wrong purse

I do not know everything about you, but I know this much: you would like to have a full, meaningful, fulfilling life.  Am I right? I think most people feel that way.  But, no matter how much you search, you’ll not find it apart from Jesus Christ.

Now, I’m not talking about life, as in breathing and heart beating.  You have that.  I’m talking about a rich, abundant life the Christ died to give you.  Life is in Christ.  Only Christ can give you life.

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men. “ John 1:4

When you get ready to really live for God, you are going to face three enemies

Daily Devotion December 28, 2010

When you get ready to really live for God, you are going to face three enemies.  You are going to face those who are in despair – they are going to be howling calamity.  You are going to face those with disdain – they are going to laugh at you.  And you’re going to face those with discouragement – they are going to say that it can’t be done.  And you better learn to silence their voices.

How do you do that? Get alone in the secret counsel halls of the Almighty and get your eyes on God.  If you listen to what those people say, you’re not going to be victorious in what God is calling you to do.

I believe David conquered Goliath because he got alone with God.  I believe Joseph survived abandonment and imprisonment because he got alone with God.  Who are your enemies today, and what are you doing to silence them?

“But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.” Psalm 94:22

When I obey God, I am a blessing to you

Daily Devotion December 27, 2010

When I obey God, I am a blessing to you.  When you obey God, you will be a blessing to me.  You cannot obey God without your obedience spilling out in a blessing to all those around you.

The same is true in the negative.  When we disobey God, we break the hearts of those around us.  Perhaps you are breaking the hearts of your father, mother, wife, husband, or best friend today because you are disobeying God rather that letting the joy of Jesus be manifest in you.

Why do you obey God?  For you good.  For their gladness.  And most of all, for His glory.

“Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”  Psalm 25:4-5

Jesus tells us to leave our offering and make things right with brother before we can worship.

Daily Devotion December 26, 2010

Jesus tells us to leave our offering and make things right with brother before we can worship.  No one can be right with God and consciously wrong with his brother.

Now, notice that Jesus doesn’t say that you need to leave you tithe and go reconcile with a brother if you have something against him (see Matthew 18 15-20).  Here, Jesus is saying that you need to get things right with a brother who has something against you.

Before you sing, before you pray, before you teach, before you give, before you worship. the Bible says you are first to be reconciled to your brother.  There is no offering on earth that can substitute for getting right with your brother.  As far as you know, is there someone who is harboring ill feelings toward you?  Then, the Lord says, “Leave it there and go get it right.”

“Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” Matthew 5:24

Do you know why everything happens?

Daily Devotion December 25, 2010

Do you know why everything happens?  It is to crown God’s Son King of kings and Lord of lords.  Jesus Christ is to have preeminence in all of history.  All of history is culmination in this one thing.

Do you know why the world was created?  Jesus.  Do you know why there is going to be a final judgment?  Because “every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:11)

Hitler and Hemingway will confess it.  Buddha and Mohammad will confess it.  None of us can change that fact – all of creation will acknowledge Jesus and Lord.

“For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.” Colossians 1:19

The Church, as the bride of Christ, was in the heart and mind of God before the foundation of the world.

Daily Devotion December 24, 2010

The Church, as the bride of Christ, was in the heart and mind of God before the foundation of the world.  In the same way, Abraham sent one of his servants to find a bride for his son Isaac and she didn’t even know anything about it (see Genesis 24)

There she was, not dreaming that tow very important persons were holding a conversation about her.  They were making plans for her.  And in Genesis 24:14, we learn that she was divinely appointed.  She had already been chosen in the heart and mind of God.  I like to call this the predetermination of the bride.

In the secret counsel halls of the Almighty, a conference was held.  A bride was chosen.  He set His affection upon us.  Isn’t it wonderful that we were chosen in Him before the foundation of the world?

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” Ephesians 1:4

Do you ever look at other Christians and say, “I wish I was like him.

Daily Devotion December 23, 2010

Do you ever look at other Christians and say, “I wish I was like him.  He prays with such finesse.” Or, “I wish I could sing as pretty as her.” Or, “I wish I was bold like him, he talks about Jesus so freely with people.”

My friend, you may not have much in this world, but I want you to know that God sees your heart.  He knows your desires.  And He sees every little thing you do – however trivial you think it is.

You may not be able to give as much as somebody else can.  You may not have the intelligence of someone else.  You may not have the talents of someone else.  God doesn’t want your gifts.  He doesn’t need your gifts.  He wants you love.

“For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.” Mark 9:41
